It is in the centre of the Earth s southern part on the opposite side of the globe from the areas where most of the population of our planet lives. Antarctica stretches from the South Pole to the 70th latitude and is twice as large in area as Australia. Twenty million square kilometers of the land mass is thick ice which forms the largest load on the earth s crust; in some places it depresses the continent below sea level. The stormy ocean isolates Antarctica from other lands. In winter the temperature is coldest on earth, sea water freezes and doubles the area of the continent: it brings its border to the 50th parallel - the latitude of Paris. The summer season lasts for two months - from December to January. When the daily hours of sunshine are longest air temperature rises to 2 or 3 degrees Centigrade above zero. Geological exploration shows that the continent in the not too distant past had a rich flora and fauna. Geologists find sings of plants and animals that are characteristic of a temperate climate which brings Antarctica to the centre of interest in many fields of science. Geological exploration may help to solve many questions about the history of the earth. What lies under the cover of the ice? How long did the life exist here? How many thousand of centuries ago did the forest grow here and huge animals people them? Why did they disappear? The unique geography of the Antarctic makes it a great natural observatory for the study of the earth and its three southern poles: the geographic, magnetic and geomagnetic. Antarctica may become a laboratory for the scientists of many nations where they can work together and develop international cooperation and contacts. TEST 2 Variant 2 1. Read and translate the text (Прочтите и переведите текст): The Universities in Britain There are more than forty universities in Britain. By 1970 about 10% of men aged eighteen to twenty one were in universities — and about 4% of women. All British universities are private institutions. Each has its own governing council. The state began to give grants to them fifty years ago. Students have to pay fees and living costs. Most students take jobs in the summer for about six weeks. Each university has its own syllabuses, and there are some quite important Differences between one and another. In general the Bachelor s degree is given to students who pass examinations at the end of three or four years of study, Bachelor of Arts for history, philosophy, language and literature; or Bachelor of Science or Commerce or Music. The classifications are not the same in all universities, and students do not normally move from one to another during their studies. Bachelor s degrees are at two levels: Honours and Pass. In some cases The Honours degree is given for intensive study and examinations in one, two or perhaps three related subjects, while the Pass (or "General") degree2 may be somewhat broader. In other cases there is no difference between Honours and Pass courses, and the Honours degree is given to the students who are more successful in their examinations. England had no other universities, apart from Oxford and Cambridge, until the nineteenth century. During the nineteenth century, institutions of higher education were founded in most of the biggest industrial towns. For a long time they could not give degrees themselves, but prepared students for the London University examinations. All of them have now achieved independent status, some only since 1945. Notes to the text: 1 - Honours degree- диплом с отличием 2 - Pass degree- диплом без отличия 2. Answer the questions on the text (Ответы на вопросы по тексту): l. Translate the text (Переведите текст): ALEUTIAN ISLANDS NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE - ALASKA The islands constitute an immense reservoir of wildlife, undoubtedly the most numerous on the continent. The only tinge of regret would be that so few of us will ever be privileged to see them at first hand, these fog-shrouded, forbidding but altogether fascinating islands. Alaska is definitely not "just around the corner" for most of us. The Aleutian Islands Refuge is the largest, in a continental sense, such area supervised by the Fish & Wildlife Service. It comprises some fifty islands, large and small, reaching from the mainland to Attu, 4,250 square miles. Stormy and formidable as the region is, a series of rock cliffs rising abruptly from the sea and without vegetation other than grass, shrubs an wild flowers, mosses and lichens, it supports an unbelievable multitude of avian and mammal life. While both ducks and geese occur as well as many shorebirds, it is the vast concentration of seabirds that give the island their living crown. Predominant are the Alcids, or Diving Birds, auks, puffins which constitute a veritable wonder. Mammals too, those of both land and sea. Probably the sea otter is the most important. Almost wiped out years ago for its fur, it is staging a very decided "comeback" and, on Aleutians finds a secure haven, the refuge being largely responsible for saving it. Blue foxes, the now rare wolverine and brown bear, as well as lemmings and hares and land animals, while seals and killer whales are common. moss - мох lichen - лишайник avian - птичий mammal -млекопитающее Alcids –частиковые (рыбы) auk — гагарка puffin - тупик sea-otter – калан (морская выдра) wolverine – росомаха lemming - лемминг seal — тюлень killer whale – касатка 2.
